Hello,
I'd like to take the SCJP 1.4 on January 13th. I've worked my way through most of the Sybex _Complete Java 2 Certification Guide_ (Programmer's Exam), and this morning I purchased the WhizLabs 1.4 mock exam simulator.
See: http://www.whizlabs.com/scjp/scjp-1.4.html
It costs $39.95 and they have a money-back guarantee: if you don't pass the SCJP, they
refund your money. After taking the assessment test (there are over ten other tests, for a total of over 600 questions) and talking with some
friends who have taken the SCJP, it appears that if you can do the WhizLabs tests, you'll do great on the actual SCJP.
If you're comfortable with Java and want to get certified in a hurry, I'd like to invite you to help a small group of us study for the next two weeks, every night, on IRC. To do this, you'd need to buy the WhizLabs SCJP simulator (it generates a machine-specific key so it's impossible to share), or at least bring sample questions from free mock tests to our jam sessions so that we can clarify confusing points and improve our skills.
My hope is that certification will help a bit in this incredibly tight job market, but beyond that, so far, studying for the SCJP has been a great way to learn things about the language that I might not otherwise have found out about for a very long time. It forces you to take a disciplined and systematic approach and is hopefully a good starting point for the SCWCD and SCJD (study for one of which will begin on
January 14th ;-) ).
If you'd like to be part of the group and have the stamina to study a LOT (eat, sleep, breathe Java) over the next two weeks, please give me a holler. I'm going to e-mail everyone who is interested tonight with the details, once we know how many people we'll have.
Thanks Very Much!

Moving this to the Programmer Cert forum where you'll probably get a better response.

Hi Steve, I am still preparing etc for the exam as i have a lot to learn, so won't really be on the same schedule (more like early march for me), but i did want to ask what you thought of the Whizlabs cd - ie, did it all work okay and how have you found the questions/explanations?

Is it really true that the JWhiz helps a lot? I bought it the other day, and I've done a few of their exams. It seems to me that all of the questions are of the same type - they don't seem to cover all of the topics I've seen covered in other mock exams. For example, they don't cover in very much detail the use of inner classes and they don't seem to cover very much of the functionality of threads. I've seen other mock tests that seem to cover a lot more (like Dan C.'s mock exam - really great by the way). (The one thing I really did like was their "JDK1.4 special" though). So, am I just thinking that the test is a lot harder than it is - or does JWhiz really reflect the difficulty of the real exam?

Hi Giselle,
On the Whizlab's demo soft, i had a look at the different available topics (in the cutomise exam option), and no mention was made of inner classes. But of what i have seen, it seems okay, some solid questions and explanations which at first take one or two reads to get comfortable with, before then trying to understand them.
BTW - where abouts is Dan C's exam? I have tried a couple of exams so far from Maha Anna's list, at

cheers,
jasper

Dear Gisselle,
Thanks for your interest about our product! Besides our personal confidence on J@Whiz1.4, the user feedback has convinced us that it adequately covers the objectives of the SCJP 1.4 Exam.
Moreover, "Special SCJP 1.4 Mock Test" is HIGHLY appreciated by the users of our product for the unique value it provides.
But yes, we believe in "There is ALWAYS a scope for improvement". I would appreciate your feedback on our product. JFYI, we are soon launching an Altogether New Test Engine (with the same content).
Regards and best wishes
Pradeep

Thank you for replying!
To Jasper, Dan C's mock exam is here: http://www.danchisholm.net/dec04/topic/index.html
With regards to JWhiz, I think it's true that the 1.4 Special helps a lot. It certainly pointed out some weaknesses I had regarding the new topics. I also thought that the explanations for the problems were complete yet clear and to-the-point. I'll certainly give some feedback to the authors once I take the real exam.
Later, Gisselle
