Today I was going to order the K&B book but noticed 2 different versions of the book that cover the SCJP 1.4 exam:
1. Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027) by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates
2. Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035) by Kathy Sierra (no Bert Bates ) - Third Edition
Which book is more up-to date for the SCJP 1.4 exam? Since the second book doesn't cover the developer exam, does it cover the programmer exam in more detail?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Harwinder

Yeah Cathy, that's the one I'm seeing on most websites. But take a look at this:
http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=405257#
and to read the cover more clearly, go to the following link:

Thanks for your response.

Hi Harwinder,
If you live in India, I remember that Kathy's book there was available for something like 400 Rupees. You should ask you friends. And the book itself looks differently from a regular amazon.com issue because it's a reprint. There's also a thread on the forum on that. Never mind if this is not your case.

Hi Vad,
You are right that the Indian prints of the books sell for about one-fifth the price of amazon.com (which is the case with most educational material in India, to make it affordable for the common man). But believe me, the content of most books is 100% same as the regular prints. Well, all this is besides the point.
Currently I'm not in India. And if you follow the link I provided above, it is interesting to see that the second book doesn't cover the developer exam at all and seems to be more focussed on the programmer one (which is what I'm interested in). I just want to make sure that I don't end up buying the wrong book because I won't be able to return it and won't be able to afford another
Thanks for your help though.
Regards
Harwinder

Hey Harwinder, can you not compare the contents of the books on amazon.com and on that other site?

Unfortunately, I can't.
Kathy, where are you? You need to tell us what you put in this 'third edition'
Thanks

I'd write a private e-mail to Kathy or Bert. They'd better know what's going on!

Howdy! This is the *real* me, so I think I can answer this one...
There is only ONE version of the book by Bert and I, and it is the one for the 1.4 exam (which includes the programmer and developer exams). The reason you sometimes see references to it with just *my* name and not Bert's, is because that's how they made samples of the cover to advertise *before* the book was actually finished. Don't ask me why... but regardless of whether you see a cover with just my name or with both our names -- IT IS THE SAME BOOK!
There IS no other version, so if my name is on it *anywhere*, then it is the one and only book. We have different *printings*, of course, but no different editions.
So the mystery is solved... whenever you see the cover with just my name on it, it means they are running a really old version of the cover -- a cover that was never on any actual books, but was just used in early ads and some book sellers obviously never changed it. There are always strange mistakes that show up in some book stores, but you don't have to worry about getting a different version of the book.
There *will* be an updated edition for Tiger, but that is not for a looooong time from now.
cheers,
Kathy
