We know of readers who have passed the 1.4 exam using the first edition of the book. We have some advice on how to use the first edition for this exam here:
http://www.ii.uib.no/~khalid/pgjc/jcbook/new-exam-note-020928.html
Keep in mind that the second edition is even more focused for the 1.4 exam.
Good luck!
