they weren't deleted from the forum -- they're there somewhere... BUT -- we upgraded the software sometime ago and when it did, all the threads got re-indexed so the links changed. So any link that goes to the old index won't work anymore.

In some cases, a thread might actually get deleted from our forums, but that's pretty rare. Maybe if the poster is posting actual exam questions, or links to sites which violate book copyrights, or is being abusive in some way. In this case though, the posts weren't deleted, but the links have changed. When you find a link like this, you can usually recover the data by replacing "www" with "saloon" in the URL. So instead of http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/001464.html use http://www.javaranch.com Your browser should allow you to copy a url by right-clicking on the link - on IE you use the menu item "copy shortcut". Then paste it into the browser address field, edit the www, and press enter. Yes, it's a little inconvenient, but it shouldn't come up too often. Hope that helps...
