Last year, I did completed all the courses for the Oracle Certified programmer for Java, including EJB, Servlets, JSP. My intention was to go for the OCP as I wanted to get a role in Java development, but Oracle decided to discontinue the cert. I never went onto to sit the exams or, indeed, use the experience gained on the courses towards finding a job.
This year, I have decided to try for the SCJP(one of the requirements for the now defunct OCP) as I want to get a commercial role within the Java (+Oracle if possible) world. I am a bit scared, however, that I don't have any commercial experience, although I know the J2EE from my previous courses. I am due to move back to the U.K. Could you tell me how I would fair, providing I achieved the SCJP certification or is this seen as important/useful for an employers point of view?
Regards,
Darren

Darren,
First of all, let me welcome you to the Ranch. Regardless of what you decide you want to do, I hope you enjoy your stay here with us.
It wasn't too long ago (maybe a week or two) that I was asked my opinion on the SCJP certification and what I, as a certified programmer, thought of the whole thing. I put my response into my blog, which you can find here.
I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're looking for, but perhaps it gives you a good starting point.
Corey
