Hi,
Could anyone tell me which SCJP exam is right for me? 1.2 or 1.4? Both are equally beneficial in terms of satisfying prerequisite for developer or web certified developer exam. Both cost $150.

Take 1.4.
1.2 won't be as impressive on your resume. I would take 1.4 for marketing reasons. You want to appear to be up on the current technology.
Version 1.5 of the SDK is coming out this summer. If you are certified in 1.2, and somebody else has a 1.4 cert, they'll look better than you on paper.

I would recommend the 1.4 exam. When Sun revised the exam from version 1.2 to 1.4, they took into account what things are most required in the workplace and tried to align the exam objectives to their findings. So, not only will having the 1.4 certification make you look more current, but it will also better prepare you for a Java programming position.

Thanks Rick and Corey. Both of you have points. Rick mentioned about putting it on resume and Corey mentioned about being better prepared for using Java at workplace.
So, why still people are getting certified on 1.2? Is 1.2 easier to clear than 1.4? Just curious...

I guess I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that very few people still get certified in Java 1.2. However, it's still around because, for those folks that were already in the middle of studying for the 1.4 exam, it would have been rather difficult for Sun to say, "Well, we're going to replace the exam you've been studying for with a new one with new objectives." Therefore, they began offering the new 1.4 exam but continued to offer the 1.2 exam for those folks already preparing for it.
I imagine, but now, anyone that had already begun studying for their 1.2 certification already has it and anyone new would simply begin with the 1.4 exam.
Perhaps when the 1.5 exam comes along, we'll see a proper retirement of the 1.2 exam.
