Hi,

This is a follow up question to Preethi's question earlier today. I am a student. I completed a basic Java course last year - we used SDK1.3

I have some extra time on my hands this summer and I would like to achieve the SCJP designation. I have several quality reference books geared towards 310-025 (SDK1.2)

Moreover, the exam 310-025 is still listed on Sun's website as a viable exam for the designation. Additionally, Sun has maintained links to tutorial packages geared for this older version of java, hence it is still supported.

Is there a really good reason I should discard my materials and upgrade my preparation focus to 310-035 ?

Thank you for being here.

My suggestion would be to focus on the 1.4 exam. Your materials are still perfectly valid for 1.4 preparation. You just need to keep in mind which things have been removed from the exam (i.e. GUI), and which things have been added to the exam (i.e. Assertions). Fortunately, the difference between the two is small enough that you can easily study for the 1.4 exam using 1.2 materials. Just make sure you take some time to look up the extras that are put onto the exam, such as Assertions and NIO.

With 1.5 on the horizon, acquiring a certification in Java 1.2 is going to seem even more out of date than it is today. With each revision of the certification, Sun removes the things they feel are "less relevant" for how Java is being used and adds things that are "more relevant." It would seem to make the most sense to go after what is seen as the most relevant version of the exam.

SCJP Tipline, etc.

What is NIO?
Is this in the SCJP1.4 exam?
