How does the SJCP exam compare to the "real" exam?

I'm currently taking the practice exams found on the CD that comes with the Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide. I realize that one of the authors (Kathy Sierra) helped write the SJCP exam, but was wondering if anyone can tell me how the difficulty of this exam compares to the real exam. I've done quite well on the 1st practice exam (86%) but don't want to get overconfident.

Hi Manny
The exam in the SCJP book by Kathy Sierra is quite good, it is quite close to what you might expect on the real exam. Have you tried other mock exams available online. Marcus Green has a good mock test pretty much close to the real exam. Please check the following URL for all the mock exams available online.

Manny -

It seems on average people score about 2% lower on the real exam, of course that varies, but we'd like to hear how you do.

I agree that some mock exams available are way too difficult and are not in line with the actual exam. This is great for people who wants to know the fine details of the Java language, however for people starting with the Java language, those difficult mock exams will have the opposite effect and will not help them but will de-motivate them.

This is one of the reasons we have a build a dynamic difficulty adjustment mode that changes the style and the level of difficulty based on the acquired skill set.

It is an art to write good mock exam questions because the objectives are very vague for the majority of the objectives.

All,
Many thanks for your responses. I'm doing a little bit more studying,(better safe than sorry) and will try out some of the mock exam links supplied. I'll let you know how I do.

Hi Manny,

What I found giving SCJP1.4 exam that its more close to the K&B's sample tests that are delivered with the book.

Also difficulty level is almost same as the Marcus Green's mocks.

So you should atleast do these two mock exams before going for the D'Day.

Good Luck...!!

I also used the Sierra and Bates book. Good book, but user/daemon threads were not covered(very easy to look up anyways). I only got 75 for the practice tests(you can download an otherone) on the CD and 85 on the marcus green tests. I finally got board of studying and just took the real thing. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome .

The thing I didnt like about the test on the CD was that it made you feel like there wasnt enough time... when in reality there was more than enough.

Quite an art to creating a "a dynamic difficulty adjustment mode that changes the style and the level of difficulty based on the acquired skill set". Is that a similar idea to adaptive testing? Tell us more.

Inuka, did you have any daemon thread questions?

I'm guessing not. Bert told me they weren't on the exam after I made the same remark. I didn't get any, anyway.

Yes there was, a tricky one at that . Thats why I mentioned it . Other than that the book covered everything. A very very good book for the certification.
