Hello Bert and Kathy,
I am SCJP certified (1.4) but is expiring soon. I used your book earlier and planning to get re-certied. The question is: Can I use the earlier book, is it still good enough or has there any updates/new material ?

Your certification is not expiring. Sun retracted all that nonsense.
If you read Sun's Certification FAQ you will see that you can request a new card and certificate.
