Sun Certified Prgrammer for Java 2 - by Kathy Siera. One of the most useful
books for the SCJP 1.4 exam.

cheers.

Do you already know Java? If so, no problem.

Read K&B as suggested, then practice on the many mock exams listed here:
http://www.javaranch.com/certfaq.jsp

When you are scoring over 90%, you're ready.

If you already know a C family language, you can still do this in a month with a lot of work. If not, I think it's very hard but possible. In these cases, start with a regular beginner's Java book. There are good ones, online and at booksellers, recommended here:
http://www.javaranch.com/bunkhouse/Beginning.jsp

Some of the best tutorials and books are published by Sun and available on their website.

QUESTION:
Has anyone here passed SCJP in a month without already knowing Java, C, or C++?
