KB Exam 2 Vs Real One

Many SCJPers have been posting by studying with 1-2 weeks without Java experience and passed with flying score. It is hard to compare the difficulty of the exam without certain standard to compare with. Some may get easier questions and some struggling with difficult pool of questions in the real exam. Can some post what did you get in the KB Mock Exam 2 (the one that downloaded) as compare to the real exam ?

thx

In K&B, I think I scored around 90%+, in real exam 95%. Plus, I only needed about 20 minutes to complete the real exam.

But I also had some Java experience on top of some formal training, and I practiced with other free tests, such as the one at www.javacertificate.com. In other words, I probably over-prepared, but that's better than under-preparing!

And some people report being abducted by aliens...

I have been following every public posting on the subject of Java Programmer Certification since 1998 (this is tens of thousands of messages) and the general consensus is that the time to study is measured in months not weeks.

Hey Marcus,

I am familiar with the statements above Actually, I got my impression of people passing scjp easily from the "SCPJ result section". To me, I really think SCJP is a challenging exam and I do not think by studying the KB book for 1-2 weeks without much experience could get flying score. It took me 1 week of studying on inner class and 2 weeks for thread and still could not get a perfect score from taking mock tests from Dan, KB and yours in these chapters. That's why I would like to find out more about the claims based on KB's Mock Exam 2 (the one downloaded as a bonus exam) and how do these people did it as compare to the real one. I am thinking that may be the person got really lucky and sit right in a pool of easy questions and claimed the exam to be easy after they passed.

By the way, thank you for the mock exam. I liked those questions a lot.

k

Well K&B had a hand in the real exams so I figure they are going to be at least as good as anyone.

(Instantly regretted mentioning alien abduction, golden rule of JavaRanch is be nice). Glad you liked my exams.

Anyone saying that they were able to pass the exam with studying only 1-2 weeks are ...

Please just don't believe them.

I had a few very interesting reactions about this subject on my
blogger.

To add to my previous response: I had some Java training and experience before undertaking the SCJP exam, and I still gave myself a month of intense study before taking the real thing. Maybe someone who's good at cramming for exams could jam enough info into their craniums to pass the exam in just two weeks, but I'd bet they wouldn't retain very much of it, if any. And that would quickly show up in the technical interview.

Completely agree with Jeff. Having some years of experience working in Java myself and invested about 4 weeks into prep, i find it hard to believe and equally unimpressive when people throw strong claims.

Ravi,

When people say "K&B" they mean "Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates" (authors).

This book, "Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide". by Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates, comes with a mock exam on CD and a free second downloadable one.

You can buy the book here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072226846/jr%5Fbunk-20/002-2639042-7392827

Other books are listed here:

Thanks, I needed to hear this. I was suspicious of these claims anyway, but it's good to hear someone w/ experience knock them down. I've been studying for several months, and I still find new surprises and confusions every day on topics I thought I already understood. Plus, trying to hold it all in memory.....It's gradually coming together, though (I think).

Ravi,

1) Pay for the K&B book.
2) The book comes with a CD that contains a mock exam.
3) The CD ALSO has a link to a web site that allows you to download a second exam (free of any charge in addition to what you paid for the book, in step one above).

Simon.

I have only seen one honest answer and reasonable. How about others that have passed that did the KB Exam2 vs the real one?
