Hi
I am about to take en exam on SCJP 1.4 in may , and then thinking to take and upgrade for 1.5, but since 1.5 is not beta anymore maybe I should reconsider taking 1.4 and start learning towars 1.5 straigt? what are your suggestions? is it really worth taking 1.4 first and then upgrade? and if so anyone have Idea if I can trade my 1.4 voucher for 1.5 ? I am willing to add some money if they request ?
thanks in advance

As said in other posts, it depends on your needs. As Tiger is quite different from SCJP 1.4 due to its new features: Generics, autoboxing, etc, you need to read much more than SCJP 1.4. In addition, currently there is no books focus on SCJP Tiger, and thus, you might need to read JLS instead of a single cert. book.

You dont need to short your 1.4 voucher and long 1.5 voucher, as the voucher is valid for ALL 310 prefix exams. So, you can use your current voucher to register SCJP Tiger.

If you're about to take SCJP 5.0, I would take it now. I didn't take SCJP 1.4, I started with 5.0, and for me it was easier than all the mock tests I was doing (these were for 1.4, as there were no materials for 5.0). Why to pay extra 150$? SCJP 5.0 covers almost everything 1.4 has plus new JDK 5.0 features. Maybe it is possible to return the voucher, you should contact Prometric about it.

I don't agree with you, Nick. Although I didn't take SCJP 1.4, so it may be very personal feeling, but I was learning mostly from 1.4 materials. Number one was K&B book (it's really excellent, but I think that some topics are not covered deep enough). I had JLS, but looked into it very rarely - I could have dealed without it. If you're very good at 1.4, you'll probably pass 1.5 even without knowing anything. But if you read some tutorials about new 1.5 features (SUN provides good tutorials, IBM developerWorks has also some good ones). So generally - SCJP 5.0 is not quite different than 1.4. It has more material plus drag'n'drop questions only.

Why to pay extra 150$?

Upgrade exam costs only $75, and the number of questions are half of the original one.
