You are at right place, I guess. You may want to search through this (and similar forums) to get information you are looking for (and much more).

If it makes sense, I probably would suggest you to go read (and practice using basic editors like notepad, editplus) some language basic book(s).

to begin with, you might want to get free Bruce Eckel book, Thinking in Java:
http://mindview.net/Books/TIJ/DownloadSites

All the best.

Hi Mustafa,

I would suggest you first take a look at the SCJP objectives here and then decide on how to tackle them. Currently, there're three versions of SCJP exam available, with SCJP 5.0 the newest and SCJP 1.2 the oldest. Don't even bother to consider SCJP 1.2, it's outdated. SCJP 5.0 just launched last month, hence, not much exam-related resources available at the moment. Conversely, there're plenty of free mocks, free notes and SCJP books for SCJP 1.4 since it's been live for quite some time. So which to take, 5.0 or 1.4? You can read some of the comments on this dilemma by other ranchers here and here.

If you plan to take SCJP 5.0, you can find some online tutorials on generics, enhance for loop, autoboxing/unboxing, etc at Sun website. Install JDK 5.0 and try out the sample code given in the tutorial. Also, do a search in this forum for tips posted by SCJP 5.0 beta takers.

JavaRanch SCJP FAQ has a lot of helpful information, mainly for 1.4 and 1.2, don't forget to check that out.

Everyone has his/her own purpose and strength. If you spend about 2 hours a day for 3 months. I am sure that you will see the different 3 months from now. Read the KB cover to cover, do the exercise and write/copy/modify/test the codes.

good luck

HI mustafa,
It is ver heartening to know that people from all over the world(esp from african countries) are willing to take up SCJP.

I would suggest you go for SCJP 1.4 beacause as of now there are not enough materials available for the SCJP 1.5

A request to Kathy:

Could you please put the pdf version(printable if possible or non -printable atleast)on the net so that wherver the book is not readily available or it is too costly for the person to procure it,he can make use of the online version. It would also facilitate people from under developed countries to pursue their ambitions of SCJP.

How did you obtain the ebook? Does it a free online resource or licenced materials? Do you obtain a written approval from the authors/owners so that you can redistribute the materials?

It is not suitable to infringe the copyright issue.

I understand that there are some people who cannot afford the book. If so, you might try to find some "really" free resoruces, like Thinking in Java, Java Tutorials from SUN, etc. If everyone infringe the copyright, the authors/publishers will no longer willing to write/invest in books, and we will become the victims finally.

If you could not afford to buy expensive books, you could use free online resources like JLS, Java Tutorials, MZ' SCJP Tiger's notes, etc.

The point is, it is ridiculous for one who infringe the copyright because of he cannot afford the book. This is just like you cannot accept your boss told you that the company took away the software you developed but did not pay you the salary because the company cannot afford your salary.

Be respect to the Intellectual property issue.

By the way, if you dont have any money to get the expensive book, why you have money to take the expensive exam? Or an exam costs USD $150 is not that expensive while comparing to a book costs USD $45?

Well Nicholas,

obviously if you want to take the exam you have to pay the $150, but you can manage without real books if you want to save some money. Easy to say that the books cost less than the certification, but you won't go far certification wise with the book alone.

If you don't have too much money and get to choose between $150 and $200, the choice is easy. BTW, he didn't say he was getting e-copies of books, he only said he could not afford "real books".

Dude, i can afford a java book but i want to get about 5 books so as to do quite well in the exams. A book of $45*5 you do the math...with an exam costin $150...just cause you have the money to get 20 cert's doesnt mean we all do. Not all of us are financially unchallenged. Some of us do have broken homes for example and want to redeem our image...hmmmm let me think "Yes that is possible!!!"

So, what do you think he was asking in the 7th post of this thread?

Then you have to make a trade off among the books, instead of infringing the copyright.

You can see, in addition to books, others can find free online resources here:
https://coderanch.com/t/249021/java-programmer-SCJP/certification/SCJP-Study-Sources

Having financial difficulty does not mean you can have excuses to perform illegal actions, and asking for illegal copies here definitely violates the Javaranch's rules.
