I am currently working towards the 1.4 Programmer exam as part of a reading group at work.
When will the 1.4 exam no longer be available for us to take? I would hate for us all to put so much effort in and find out in a few month's time that we can no longer do the 1.4 exam because it's been replaced by 1.5!
I am fresher and planning to give scjp 1.4 in aug end.
I am going for 1.4 because material is available as (I am fresher no exp.) it would be diff for me to go for 5.0.
My purpose of 1.4 is to learn java and also find a job (help in job hunt).
So is it ok that i give 1.4 learn new features of 5.0 and go for interview or I should wait for mateiral for 5.0 (books) and give 5.0 only.

The people that being certified gets you past usually don't know Java from a pile of beans so the exact version will probably not matter too much. Once you get to the technically knowledgable people they will work out your level of knowledge through discussion with you.
It is much harder to pass a certification exam before the exam specific books hit the market so if I were in your shoes I would either aim for the 1.4 exam, or study for the 1.5 at a leisurly pace with the intention of getting the 1.5 material when it comes out and then intensifying my study.
IMO Java 1.4 is for girls. Real men take the Java 5.0 exam and it's important on several levels. The test is new, the question formats are new, the material is way new. Java 5.0 has a number of dramatic changes that are essential going forward. Java 6.0 has zero language changes in comparison. So this will carry you through Java 6.0 in terms of meaningful certification.
I believe that the SCJP 1.2 exam is still available. So 1.4 will be available for some time to come. By the way, SCJP certs don't expire anymore the way they used to. Your 1.4 cert will always say "1.4", but it will never expire.
If you have already started preparing for the 1.4 exam I would continue on that path. I would not be persuaded by the argument that Java 1.4 is for girls.
