Sun certified java programming certification is highly damanding in present scenario. Application programmer can bargain now heavy prices. I'm going for JCP certification and using ucertify exam simulation where i got 50% discount also and James Jawarski study guide which cover almost topics. How this will be helpful for me.... totally depend on my certificate. I'm quite optimistic.

Hi,
In my view any thing can be made a BIG tool for money generation. It is a matter of how you sell it. You should have the talent to use what ever you have and become a brand of it. I have seen people who have done it, for example I know a lecturer who earns around $60 per hour for lecturing for SCJP examination, $60 is nothing in the europian context, but in a country like Sri Lanka where I am from, it can be a monthly salary of a worker.
It is a matter of diverging->converging->then imerging as a star with the talents you have. Good luck with your SCJP preparation, I have earned quite a lot because of SCJP. So I would recommend it as a good qualification to be recognized.

To me, the certification may or not may bring in that extra money. What's more important is actually the process of preparing for the certification. The knowledge & skills acquired along the way. And how these helps me in my daily work. So that I could work more with lesser time.

Which means eventually I've more social time.

...until you start work on the SCJD!

Actually, an SCJP certification can put a lot of money in your pocket if u consider these ideas:
1. Identify new business application development needs and seize the opportunity.
2. Identify where training needs on Java occurs and demonstrate both your competence in language and its(Java) beauty.
3. Sensitize interest in Java around your locale.
4. Consolidate ur skills in advanced Java programming concepts and use them.

If I must be sincere, u make more money when you build very competitive business applications not in teaching. Brace up for more money.

All other employment factors being equal, then having the certificate will be an added bonus.

The problem is that all other factors will NEVER be equal.

The chance of two candidates being equal in every aspect are almost zero.

Do you have a technical degree from a university? If you do, then a certificate is really just a form of on the job training.

However, if you don't have a relevant diploma/degree, the certificates are a very worthwhile.

Don't forget, by far the most important factor in gaining employment is past relevant experience. Certificates prove you have certain basic skills, but on the job success prove you can do something.

By the way, my company hires on a) experience and b) personality .... certificates are not even a factor really.

However, if you're going through an employment agency or hoping to work for a large corporation with a HR department, the certificates will be useful (because the type of people working in those places don't actually have a clue).

Hope this helps...

I guess one should see certifications as forms of self-actualization acts. They serves as a gauge on your level of understanding on certain terminologies and/or methodologies. If one sees it as a "guarantee" way of making money, wouldn't it be very disappointing when the expected don't come true?

Well, I must say that the certifications help in distinguishing you from your fellow interviewees for a particular job requiring the relevant skillset, but what weigh more are the "bigger" certifications - diplomas, degrees, msaters, PhD. I got the SCJP during year one of my diploma course and SCJD during year three of my diploma course, nothing great, just that the knowledge gained in the process is very useful in your school projects.

Just graduated from my dip and now waiting to serve National Service, how can certifications help in that? I get less training? Just some past sastifactions.

I agree with SCJP or SCJD help alot in college or university projects. As i still study for my diploma right now, i have SCJP, and it did great help me on projects, also increased my java knowledge. But through projects of java based, i also can know more about java packages in API(not learned in SCJP, but more to practise on java) when doing the projects. my application runs fine, just that security alittle bit lack. Well, from here, i know i need to know more about security when using java...

SCJP or SCJD or other java cert, are just terms for employer to know the "status" of the employee. if the job candidate do not have SCJP cert, but do have a lot of working experience, some employer just dont hire them since they do not have any basic requirement cert. Then this employer looks at candidate as "brand". you dont have the brand, we dont hire you. just like items on Pharmacy, the men lotion no brand or not popular brand, so customer(act as employer in business term) dont buy it. But if customer see the "Loreal" brand, most of them just buy it.

I hope that someday i go interview with some company, the bosses better dont look at cert, if they do, i will say to them repeatly : "I hope you find your favor brand. sorry if i dont have the brand you like. "

OK, this thread was left alone when it was started, for some reason, but now that it's going again, it doesn't belong here -- it belongs in SCJP, where I will now move it.
