If you are using the 5.0 version of Heller's book, be sure to contact the authors for the missing information.

No, I'm fairly sure Barry is not implying that the book is not useful. I studied with an earlier version of this book and it was very good. It is just that the author posted here a while ago that he has additional material.

I remeber that there were some posts about the book being inadequate for SCJP 5.0. Then there was a topic where one of the authors wrote that there was to be additional material made available.
Here
is the topic.

i recommend The Java Programming Language 4th edition by Ken Arnold.I'm now studying this book and thinking it's the best book for learning java lang.I've finished Phillip Heller book for a while but I don't think this book is appropriate for preparing scjp5.0.

The Phil Heller Book for SCJP 5.0 is a total waste of time and energy. It doesnot cover important & new java topics in detail, just touches them or not at all...

The authors claim that supplemental material on some topics are available via email and on their website. I sent them N emails requesting the supplemental material, no response from them, there is nothing on their website (sybex.com) regd that material. I sent them a long list of errata that I found after reading the book, they never cared to put that info on their website. The errata that they publish is incomplete.

Hats off to you if you can pass the new exam with Phil Heller book as your primary source of preparation.....

I had to postpone my exam date.. now waiting for K&B...

Agreed. It is almost a complete rewrite of the 3rd edition and incorporates the new Java 5.0 features throughout the book. But it's not exactly an easy read.

I passed the SCJP 5.0 with studying Complete Java 2 Certification by Phil Heller with a pretty low score. I have to agree with Rupak Khurana that this book is not worth the money and if you just study this book, you will not be ready for the exam, especially with all the 5.0 new features asked on the exam. Do some mock exams available online and you'll know what I mean. My advice is to do more mock exams and review all the mistakes you made. Good luck.
