dear dhawan,

go for scjp5.0 that has following advantages
1. it has enhanced features
2. your coding knowledge is tested in that.
3. since it is relatively tougher than the 1.4, it will be more valued.
4. prepare well with any good simulators available in the market. also
you can see some info in java.boot.by as well.

Which version you go for I think is something you should base more on what you're comfortable with and what you're using in the marketplace. If you're just now starting to prepare, I'd suggest going for 5.0, if only because it's the latest version. I don't know that any employer (save for one whose interviewers have taken the exams themselvces) would know or care if 5.0 is harder or easier than the 1.4 exam.

And to answer your other question, no - SCJA is not a prerequisite for the SCJP exam.

When we created 1.5 we considered this question. We took very few things out of 5 that were in 1.4, so it's safe to say that in almost every case 5 is a broader, more comprehensive exam than 1.4 was. I'm hard pressed to come up with a reason that an employer would prefer to see a 1.4 certification rather than a 5 certification.

hth,

Bert
