I am a newcomer to Java, and have recently installed JDK 1.4.0. I'd like to create applets for my website which are viewable in IE 5.5 without the need for a plug-in. The applets I have made have worked with appletviewer and Netscape 6.2 (with plug-in), but not IE 5.5. Further more, examples in web tutorials which work with IE online don't work if I compile the source code on my PC and the try to view them with IE 5.5.
How can I make Applets that are compatible with IE 5.5?. Any help greatly appreciated.

You're out of luck. Microsoft pulled Java from the latest service release of IE 5.5 and has no intention of ever implementing one in 6.0 and beyond.
People with IE 5.x's that had previously installed the JVM continue to be able to use that component, but a clean install won't be able to.

try this,
use the <OBJECT> tag instead of the <APPLET> tag on your web page. Might make a difference as the <APPLET> tag calls the MS VM while the <OBJECT> tag will use the Sun version. This confusion exists because of MS being stuck with the lawsuit.
