It just might help you if you have one or both of these certifications - but don't MSc programs just require a good BSc result in relavent subjects?

If you have next to no programming experience, then learn Java properly first - don't just learn enough Java to pass a certification, you will need a lot more knowlege for programming at MSc level.

For books I can recommend "The Java Programming Language, 4th Edition" and the Kahlid Mughal book for SCJP 1.4 certification.

Being a graduate student as far as I know all they look at are your Undergraduate GPA (usually in your subject) and your GRE score (if they take a GRE).

I guess Chris is right. To do MS, you need to pass GRE first, question of SCJP comes next to that. But why worry for it now, you can do SCJP even after getting admitted to MS right???.

I suggest that you become involved in your department's research. IMHO, I think the admissions group would find a demonstrated interest in research more appealing than an IT certification.

Think about a Professor whom you might enjoy working with and then learn about their research. If you find it interesting, then approach them, share your interest and ask if there is anyway you can help.

More than likely they will have something or other they need done which they would be happy to share with you, assuming they felt they could count on you.

They focus on what they want to focus on and you gain valuable trust, exposure, experience and references.

Then, do the work and do it well Good luck.

Certifications or not; profs do give preference to some one with real world experience when they award scholarships under their wing. But that would be after the initial admission is complete.

hi ram
first off, did u give GRE and Toefl exams. if yes then lemme know what r the univ's u have aplied for. coz if those univ's have that particular specialization of ur interests then u may have some chances of getting aid/asst'ship or any. anyway i've taken my GRE and Toefl exams. even i am in the same way, some of my friends there ,suggested me that these certifications may count.
