Amazon.com gives inconsistent explanation about SCJP 1.5 book availibility. Could somebody explain me the following:

Availability: This title will be released on January 31, 2006. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

Only 1 left in stock--order soon (more on the way).

Cheers,
Marcin

They should have read the book first before setting up their website

Looks like the book is shipping earlier than expected and amazon didnt completely update the item.
Bookpool also has it in-stock

My prediction is that it's going to be weird for a while. First thing this morning Amazon said the book was shipping, within 24 hours. Yeah, great news! Then 1/2 an hour later it's back to being published on Jan. 31. We all get to see the buggier side of Amazon

The other thing I noticed is that Amazon is using a picture of a "demo cover" that still says "Java X" - the real book of course will say "Java 5". Amazon is listing the 1.4 TOC, and topics, and on and on.

In any case, there's powder in the mountains and Kathy and I are going to go carve turns for a few days, we'll look forward to any updates on Saturday

The problem is most likely to be with the correctness of the publisher's information sent to Amazon. Garbage in, garbage out - remember

Like here's the publisher's blurb.

Amazon.com is now saing "ships within 24 hours" again. I hope it`s the "final" information (in sense of java 'final' keyword). Anyway, thanks a lot, Bert. I`ve been waiting for this day for half a year.

Regards,
Marcin

P.S. By the way, does anybody know the better (cheaper&faster than from amazon.com) way to buy the book in Poland.

I recommend www.bamm.com, shipping to Poland is relatively cheap, I paid like $18 for two heavy books and they ship via UPS, it took only like 5 days for the parcel to get to me, so if you order it tommorow, you should get it next week. If you wait with your order till friday, they can ship it on monday and probably you would have to wait another week.

I`m going to order the book this week and wondering what other book would be useful for me now. Since the difference in shipping between one and few books is small it would be good to take advantage of that and make bigger order rather than order one book at a time. You might want to consider that too.

As for custom fee, they didn`t charge me though there was stated that was a purchase, but keep in mind that if they charged you you would have to pay whole parcel`s value (book plus shipping cost) for example $50, plus 10% duty, because it`s from outside of European Union, that gives $55 plus 22% VAT tax, that`s $67 plus something for customs clearance... it doesn`t look good, does it? Hopefully you`ll get your book without any problems, I`ve ordered a couple of times via UPS or DHL from US and they have never charged me. Avoid shipping via USPS Global Express Mail, it`s automatically insured so customs assuming there`s something valuable inside have an eye on it and if there`s any sign product inside parcel was purchased you will likley get charged.

Hope that helps Marcin, anyway, you`ve got a Private Message.

I ordered the book from Chapters.ca (a Canadian competitor to Amazon) a few days ago; I received an email from them this evening stating that my order is en route to me. I should receive it tomorrow.

To buy this book in india, check : http://www.firstandsecond.com/. They have 9 books in stock(in USA Warehouse). Availability : 24-29 days(max). They confirmed that they will try their best to send the book in 15-20 days.

I e-mailed amazon and customer service was dumb enough to mail back saying "they are sorry and item is not yet published and will be shipped on Feb.8. As a courtesy we will make it express shipping". I think amazon is overhyped and their systems and software is as inefficient as anywhere else.

I have similar problems with Amazon for another book,
when it says "Available in 1 to 3 weeks",
but after the 3 weeks expired,
they mail me back to say that I'll to wait another 6 weeks !!
And the page still says "Available in 1 to 3 weeks"...

Instead of waiting for Amazon, can you get it from your local bookstore?

Today (January 5th), my local Barnes and Noble in Raleigh NC had three copies of the new Java 5 Study Guide. Of course now there are only two copies left.

I have just checked bookpool.com but the availability is out-of-stock. Does it right? What was the status when you ordered?

I have been waiting for The Book for months and my vaucher expires in Jaunary so I need it ASAP. Although the shipment to Europe costs almost twice as the book.

You can still order. They will send it out when they restock, which usually takes a few days.
Also, you can schedule an exam to use the voucher before expiration. Then reschedule for a later date. You can reschedule several times.

Arghh!
I checked all book sellers you mentioned above and a dozen another. Some of them do not ship to my country, another one does not accept credit card payment due to "excessive credit card fraud" in this region.
It can be ordered from the publisher too but they neither show information about their stock, nor about shipment. And the good old Amazon.com say they have it in stock but if I place an order, it shows estimated dispatch date is 31st Jaunary. It's unbelievable!

I know this forum is principally not for talk about online bookstores but I'm disheartened. I need this book but have no more ideas how to buy it.

Did anyone get it from Amazon?
I'm still hoping that dispatch date was shown just because of inconsistent publish and availability dates.

For those having trouble with Amazon...

I ordered the book from Amazon Thursday. The web site said that it would ship within 24 hours. When I got the confirmation email from them it said that it would not ship until January 31st. That frustrated me and so I emailed customer support and complained.

Meanwhile, I called around to all of the local book stores (I'm in Maryland) and Barnes and Noble had one in stock so I went down and picked it up on Friday evening.

That night I got an email back from Amazon's customer support that said that the late shipping date was a glitch in their system and that the book was actually shipping within 24 hours. I thanked them for the explanation, but cancelled the order since I found one locally. Amazon's glitch cost me a bit of money (it's more expensive at Barnes and Noble) and cost Amazon the sale. In general I've been happy doing business with Amazon, but in this case they dropped the ball.

In any case, I have the book now and am VERY pleased with it. The book is densely packed full of incredibly good information. While it was frustrating to wait so long for it, it's well worth it. Thanks to Kathy and Bert for an excellent certification resource.

All that to say, you might want to give Amazon another shot or check your local bookstore because the book is out there.

The site says that they have the book in stock, so i cancelled my order on amazon and placed it there.
But guys, i haven't received the book yet. I just wanted everyone to know before it runs out of stock.

Guys Guys,
I have accidentally got two copies of this book. One i ordered from Walmart and another my room mate ordered for me without knowing that i have also ordered.

Now i have an option of sending one book back.
But in case any of you are in New Jersey and want this book, i am OK to give it to you. (At the same price that is on Walmart). I can be reached on 2019367072.
I am planning to send it back on Monday. So do call me back before if you want to pick this book from me.

Thanks
Anand

There is hope at amazon.
Yesterday it said "Usually ships within 5 to 9 days".
Today it says "Usually ships within 4 to 7 days".

I live in Italy and...Amazon.uk says:
Availability: usually dispatched within 4 to 6 weeks.

I think I would have received this book early, if I had ordered it from Mars...

I'm also living in Europe so I was in the same situation. But I have just received it.

I ordered it from the publisher, McGraw-Hill/Osborne. So I got it now, but it wasn't cheap. The shipment costed as much as the book itself. But I can't wait, I have to take the exam at the end of January.

So if it's urgent for you to get it ASAP and cheapness is not the most important aspect, you can order it and you'll get it in a week.

And thanks to Kathy and Bert for the book.

Concerning the strange Amazon.com availability status, I really agree with you.

I am very disappointed and in face of this I have canceled my order at Amazon.com

You can buy this book directly from McGrall-Hill web site which is the official publisher for this book. Pls Take note : http://books.mcgraw-hill.com/getbook.php?isbn=0072253606

At Amazon.com it costs $32.99 and you have to wait for a long time. On the other hand, at books.mcgraw-hill.com it costs $49.99 and the book is really in stock (You can trust !) and ready for immediate shipping via DHL Air Door-to-Door

I have placed the order last January 12th and after 3 working days I received an email confirming the invoice number and the tracking number for my order.

The estimated time for shipping from USA to Brazil is only 4 days, so after search my shipping status through the web I could see that my order has just left DHL's gateway located in Miami. So now it's on the way and probably will be delivered before the estimated delivery date. Very good ! Really very good ! I full recommend !

it's the same confusion in europe... in my case, I ordered from amazon two days ago, and they said "usually ships within two weeks" or so... and I got to a page where they said it is being released in june... but already yesterday in the evening I got a mail that the book is now on the way to me

so you probably don't need to care about what they say about the availability, anyway: good luck
