Before people start panicking - no, there is no Text class. (There's an interface, in org.w3c.dom, but ignore that...) He means the java.text package.

Hi,

In my openion, inclusion of such topics is fair enough. I don't have much knowledge of JDK 1.5 but such things can be said to be a part of core java as a general.

Furthermore, I think java 1.5 hasn't been used after it was ivolved. There was a lot excitement before its release. but people who are already developing in 1.3/1.4 are not really want to go for 1.5 and want to stick as there is quite difference between 1.5 and the previous releases. Even I am one of them. Is that because most of the clients don't want to take risk of moving to 1.5? But again, I've heard that it has a improved a lot then its predecessors so, it should be strongly considered. It hardly take little time to get to know about the improvization of 1.5 and everyone should go ahead. What do you think ranchers?

There are now 3 versions of the exam. I think even SUN should think about this and slowly remove the previous versions of the exam. But this shouldn't be a sudden change. It may take 1-2 years too! But thats how the developers or tech. companies can be molded.

A lot of companies are using third party products, like say Weblogic 8.1, which doesn't support Java 1.4, but Weblogic 9 does support it. So in order for those companies to upgrade to 5.0 they need to also pay and upgrade Weblogic. This is expensive and might cause modifications. So they wait to move to Java 5.0

We use Java 5.0 at work, and I don't want to go back and work in Java 1.4

Are you sure Mark? WL 8.1 obviously supports java 1.4. And WL 8.1 comes with jdk 1.4.1_03 by default. Even we can change the default compiler as BEA have provided the option to change the java compiler and can be done through the console.

If you've written 1.4 by mistake, and your intension to write 1.5 instead, you are correct. But I think again, as I said before, WL 8.1 supports to change jdk version by console. I've never tried to use 1.5 in WL 8.1 but I think it should support.

I totally agree with you that there are lot many changes need to be incorporate while migrating from 1.3/1.4 to 1.5 and lotsa other issues too like to give time to developers to understand and adopt new concepts of 1.5. And I think I've mentioned that in my first post that because of such issues, 1.5 is not mainly used or very less used.

BTW, as you said you're into 1.5, are you using the features which are there in jdk 1.5 and not in the previous releases? You should be I guess. Which app. server are you using for the development?

"There are now 3 versions of the exam. I think even SUN should think about this and slowly remove the previous versions of the exam. "

I have been following the SCJP since the exam for JDK1.0 and Sun have always given a good lead time but eventually obsoleted the old exam. Thus I would expect to have only 2 SCJP exams available within the next year or so. Then at some point there will be 3 again when an exam for JDK 1.6 comes out (if that is what they call it).

ps (I know obsoleted is not a verb but it feels soooo nice)

I have tried use 1.5 in WL 8.1, and it doesn't work. You will get a lot of funky errors.
