To go for SCJP 1.4 or 1.5 exam which is more useful and challenging?

Both are useful, both are challenging
Go for 1.5 and you'll learn the new stuff as well.

If you want a challenge then 1.5 is definitly the good choice. At least there are some good resources to help you study now, such as the Book by Sierra and Bates and (ahem) my own TigerTamer Book and mock exams. YOu can see a sample sixty questions from my database with the link at the end of this post.
