I really hope the Sybex book is as good as K&B's book since that is the book I choose to purchase and read.

I think you should do okay if you read the Sybex book, take those practise exams and do all the Mock Exams you can find on the internet.

I will know if this tactic will work after March 10th (this is when I am taking the exam in SCJP).

I just started reading the K&B book.
I already finished reading the Sybex book, I dont recommend the sybex book.
I am on page 50 of the K&B book and I already found some things that were not even in the sybex book!!

The sybex book alone is not enough I think.
The K&B book is, according to the people here.

To me that does not say anything really more than the K&B book might bring up more that is not on the exam?

If the statement that you made is true, then I feel ripped off by Sybex. It feels somewhat hopeless.

Actually this is what I expierenced with the sybex book:
* There is to much info in the book on some aspects that are left out of SCJP 1.5
* The new 1.5 features do not get enough attention.

The sybex book was one of the first or the first book that came out for the 1.5 exam, because it was out that fast I think its made in a hurry and that was exactly the feeling I had during the reading of the book.
Anyways the book is ok considering the 1.4 features but for 1.5 I just had the feeling it was made in a hurry.

I can't tell you enough about the K&B book but I do know that everybody here likes it, thats why I just bought it.

The people who wrote the Sybex book were also involved in making the exam (at least that is what they say in the book).

Can you give an example on what is covered in the K&B book and not in the Sybex book that is relevant to the exam? It would be nice to know.

So far I am happy with the book....I'll let you know how I feel after the exam.

Well, I am starting to believe that the Sybex book is not enough after taking some Mock Exams....I can't believe this. Well, I just have to take the test and hope for the best. I am not going to fork out another $60 for a book.

I bought the Sybex book when it was the only available. I buy the K&B 5.0 in January. I made few mock exams and just pass my 5.0 certification this week. Trust me K&B 5.0 >>> Sybex 5.0 !!!

Sybex is just a quick update of the 1.4 version in which they didnt remove the old material ( all complex operators + precedence, etc. ) and put few new 5.0 sections which are not discuss enough and properly in the book.
My guess is that they just want the book out as soon as possible to attract as many people they can until an other book came out.

Even the old 1.4 topics are discuss in more detail in K&B. 346 pages for the programmer section of Sybex VS 800 pages from the programmer section of K&B.
And K&B doesnt contain any additionnal information. It is just aim to the exam.

If you can do it, just stop reading the Sybex book and buy the K&B 5.0 book immediately.

Only bad point for the K&B book is the mock exam on the CD. A lot of bugs inside and no drag and drop questions.

I am going to try to reschedule the test date for a later date. If I can do that, I will order the K&B book and start from the beginning. It feels more safe that way.

Sorry for stealing this thread.

i also bought the sybex book, and then the k&b book when it was released. i read the sybex book without being too careful about remembering the details, and now i am working through the k&b book from the beginning to the end, making index cards of every detail that is not fully clear to me.

if i would not have read the sybex book before, i would have to make many more index cards. because 800 pages are too much to go through it twice.

after all, if you get only one book, i would recommend the k&b book. only working with the sybex book would be possible, but requires to get additional information from the web, imo. but i should mention that i did not do the exam yet

I bought the SCJP book by Kathy and Bert. I must say it is huge difference between that book and the Cybex book.

I am glad I spent the extra money

Thanks.
