Does anyone in the D.C suburbs offer apprenticeship (unpaid)?
I volunteer to work for no pay as long as I can gain some Java experience to get me a good job.

There may also be volunteer jobs you can find online that would lend good experience. For example, the Source Forge is a large repository for open source projects. This site also has a few ongoing projects that, depending on your current experience and interest, may be relevant.
