Hi SCJPers!

Just for fun, let's find out how many people are studying for the SCJP 1.4 exam versus the SCJP 1.5 exam. If you're studying for the SCJP 1.5 exam, add a post here, and maybe tell us how you made your decision.

Thanks!

Bert

hmm... i dont know if i am eligible to vote. I already took the 1.5 exam. I took it because i wanted a challenge. There are just too many mocks that simulate the 1.4 exam very well and people around me made a mockery of it sometimes, by learning for it for a month and scoring more than 85% !!! I would like the exams to be a bit tougher. SCJP 5 is tougher in the relative sense but the level of difficulty needs to be stepped up a touch. The topics covered need to be broader.

I'm already certified under 1.4, so I plan to take the 1.5 upgrade exam (probably after the SCWCD exam though).

I'm studying for the 1.5 exam, because it's the latest version of the language. Until I came here, I had no idea that one test was easier than the other, but I don't think that really matters. I have to study no matter what. I haven't programmed in java in several years, so I'm behind the curve on 1.4 too. And I assume that shops will use 1.5 features if they're available and know about them.

I'm studing for SCJP 1.5. Why?

It's new (ok, it's not so new).
It's cool (Generics,Autoboxing,Enums,etc).
It's Java EE 5 JDK.

Hi Bert,

I am a Windows Mobile developer and I am preparing for SCJP 1.5 from your book after a going thru a mental torture of selecting between two exams ( 1.4 or 1.5). I opted for 1.5 as it is the latest version.

thanks-

Was waiting for K & B book since 3 months, only for 1.5 ofcourse.

Reasons are simple:
1) Its Latest
2) When they called it Java5 that means their must be something great and they will go with it.
3) Will Look impressive on my resume and differentiate me in a Job queue
4) So many good features to make a programmers life easier
5) More tougher, broader than scjp1.4 and ofourse i don't have to study those ancient bit operations atleast

what else;

Studying for 1.5.

Reason: by the time I become certified AND get more real world experience, I think 1.5 will be much more commonly in use than 1.4** (which isn't to say there won't be tons on <=1.4 code around waiting for maintenance).

**but I'm new, so what do I know

I am preparing for the SCJP 5 exam. I think it is better to be prepare for what is state-of-the art. In addition, I am not very excited by shift operations and didn't want to chafe at the bits. It is possible that the Java 5 exam, which relies less on memorization, will also be viewed by a greater number of people as a reliable measure of subject mastery. I also have the feeling that the exam content is increasingly more appropriate. This goes back a little while, but I think it was ridiculous for the 1.2 exam to test for AWT when the direction was clearly to Swing. Similarly, were bit operations as late as SCJP 1.4 really all that appropriate.

By the way, your book is good - perhaps the only worthwhile SCJP 5 book that is available. An interesting question is ... how many people might have already taken the SCJP 5 exam if the book was available 3-4 months sooner.

I am going for SCJP 5.0 because it's the newest version and seems interesting. But I don't know whether Java 1.4 is more widely used.

Hi

I'm studying for SCJP 1.5 (as opposed to 1.4) because of the following reasons:

1. To learn new language features and get certified with the latest in J2SE.
2. Adds more weightage to your CV compared with 1.4 under present context.
3. Have more fun!

Why? I could not live without generics and autoboxing (varargs and enums I can live without but nice features none the less)

Cheers and good luck to everybody!

I'm preparing for 5.0. Why? Because I want to learn features brought by tiger and certification process forces me to learn it properly ;-)

Second reason is that 5.0 is harder to pass than 1.4 and that's good challenge, isnt it?:-)

hi,
i am preparing for SCJP 1.5
i came to the decision for giving 1.5 against 1.4 is very simple - opting for the latest technology also i read many posts which tell that its better to opt for 1.5 (since it is the latest) also as a fresher engineer in IT , i am searching for a better job.

On the other hand , i have read some posts telling that 1.5 is tougher than 1.4 (which some times scares me a lot) but "the more difficult tasks gives more opportunities "

so i have kept my cool and consistently studying for the exam ,(i am a slow learner), for the last 3 months
thanks for creating this forum(esp this thread), i never feel that i am studying alone.
all the best to fellow ranchers who are preparing for the exam

Hi Bert!

I am preparing for SCJP 5.0 Tiger edition. As everyone in the loop is mentioning about the toughness of the exam very few have actually discussed about the advantage of having the latest certificate. This not only hones you to the "Tiger" edition of Sun but also gives us the pleasure to learn the advancement in the SUN World. Hope to get the better grades in the Exam. And your valid suggestions to prepare for the exam will be grateful to all of us!!!

I'm studying for the 5.0 exam, because is the latest and it would be the most common used version in the next years.

However there are not a lot of mock exams for this version yet.

Will go for Tiger(SCJP 5).....
Any thing below TIGER is not that challenging....

Anyone can score 100 in 1.4 if you prepare well and have a strong practical experience (and a little bit of luck, ofcourse.... )

But its not that easy to score high, when playing with Tiger.....

Its always better to defeat a Tiger than killing a Sheep.

I am also preparing for SCJP 1.5 because
1) I wanted to learn the new topics added in Java 1.5. Certification is the best way to learn and test that knowledge.
2) Sooner or later Java 1.5 is going to replace 1.4 in the market. Having certification in 1.5 will be beneficial in that case.
