mac system crashes

Hi,
First time I am working on mac system. When I try to run the Applet or any java program (which run perfectly on window XP ) it crashes the system.Do I need to install diff version of JRE on mac ?

What Mac OS version? 9 or X? (ten). Also, what browser are you using? Mac OS9 only supports jdk 1.1.8, and the OSX version only supports 1.3.1; I'm not sure what version is supported via the plug in, but you will need Apple's java plug-in for your web browser, and the browser you use has to be compatible with it.
