image viewer applet

I am trying to use a java applet slide show viewer that works perfectly when opened directly from a local drive or viewed remotely via a UNC address, but only shows the grey box with a "load: class 'applet' not found" message when accessed via it's URL.
This applet is on Windows 2000 server hosting IIS 5. I've tried all the IIS 5 and NTFS privilege modifications I can think of with no luck. Does IIS 5 serve applets natively, or does it need some major configuration?

The files that you want to see should reside at directory
on your server.
Here an excerpt where I check whether it is an apllication
or an applet.

Make sure that your browser is java-enabled (somewhere a good mark!)
and maybe if you use swing-facilities that java 1.3 is installed( plugin)
Hope this helps
