Weblogic application lockup

Hi There,
Urgent help required.
I am investigating into a problem. We have Weblogic 4.5 as web server. An applet is loaded on browser which has few forms. One such form is a query form. User enters in value for search fields. Upon submit, a servlet running on Weblogic 4.5, is called which in turn calls pure java application running on back-end which makes query to oracle database. Basically this is three tier architecture. For the indexed fields, query runs fast. But for non-indexed fields, the query takes about 20 minutes to complete. When such long query is executed by a client, and meanwhile other users login to web application, after some time the browser gets locked up. That means the browser of users who try to login, or those who are already login and fire a search query, gets locked up, till the long search query fired by the first user is finished. Once the long search query finishes, all other browser unlocks and returns to normal.
The issue is not that query is taking a long time, but that once the application locks up, no other user can use the system, while the long search is completed.
Can anyone have any idea why is this happening, and how to resolve this?
Your help in this regard highly appreciated.
