The upgrade exam is intended for those who already have a 1.4 certification. This exam consists of lesser number of questions and is more focussed on the questions based on the 1.5 version

Welcome to JavaRanch!

I wouldn't expect the upgrade exams to be any harder than the "full" exam of the same version. The focus of the upgrade exams is on the differences (new features and/or different test objectives) compared to prior versions.

By taking the "full" exam instead of the upgrade, you would just be paying more money to take a longer exam that includes topics you've already demonstrated you know.
