I was in the midst of responding to this post a few hours ago, when there was a fire in our building and we all had to evacuate and go home for the day.

Anyway, as you saw from Barry's link, strictfp ensures consistent floating point behavior across different platforms. For details, see JLS - 15.4 FP-strict Expressions and JLS - 5.1.13 Value Set Conversion.

For the SCJP exam, know that strictfp can be applied to interfaces, classes (both top-level and nested), and methods (including main) -- but cannot be used in conjunction with abstract.

I don't think it was too serious -- mostly a lot of smoke in the cafeteria. No one hurt, as far as I know. I expect we'll all be back in the building tomorrow.
