is it possible to stop an applet from loading untill a button is pressed in a form on a web page?

No, that's completely under the control of the browser. You could try not having the applet in the web page, and only inserting it into the page DOM once the button is pressed. Don't know if this works with applets, though.

What is the problem you're trying to solve? There may be other ways to achieve a similar effect.
