proxy applet

Does someone know how I can create a connection to a remote host via a proxy? I use in my applet Sockets. The solution must work for http and https. I know that if I use URLConnection the proxy settings are automatically read from the browser settings. This is not the case by Sockets. Do I read first the System properties and how do I know if authentification is needed? Is this also part of one of the properties?

Regards,

Johannes
