What do you mean by a java program ( A java application ? ). If yes, then you can define the events on your button and accordingly can call the java application.

What kind of Java applicatiopn is this - can you bundle it with your applet, or is it installed on the client machine? If the former, then you can probably just call its main method. If the latter, then it gets more complicated.
