Hi, I've registered for SCJP 5 this august and planning to appear for the same in October. But after knowing that Java 6.0 will be released in september i'm planning to wait for some more time and see if SCJP 6 is launched (say by Dec-Jan). What should i do? Also suggest me how much time will be sufficient for study for a good preparation for SCJP exams. Should I take more mock tests or concentrate on concepts?

There's not really a point to waiting for the next version yet. Since the new one's just being released in September, I'd imagine that the earliest an SCJP for Java SE 6 will come out is 2Q07.

Plus, if you're already registered for SCJP for Java SE 5.0, you're somewhat committed for that exam.

Time it takes to prepare is entirely dependant on how comfortable you feel with Java and how well you're doing onthe mock exams. If you use it frequently and feel comfortable, than you'll need less time... I found that working with it, though, was the best preparation, with brushing up on the areas that my job didn't touch.

Good luck!

I think Theodore is right - I can't imagine a new verion of the exam before Q2, and if I had to bet I'd bet more like Q3 or Q4 - additionally, there's a reasonable chance that the next version will be an update, not an entirely new exam.

The language/jre differences between 5 and 6 are going to be very minor. Scripting looks like the main change.
