I am studying using SCJP for Java 5.0 by Sierra/Bates.
I am getting extremely low scores on the end of the chapter exercises, 10% - 40%. Appreciate any suggestions on improving the the exercise scores.

Instead of just reading the chapter and doing the exercises, I am thinking about coding with the examples in the chapter and also tinkering the code to understand the concepts better. Wondering if this could help.

Absolutely! Fire up the IDE and start hacking. You'll retain much more of the material if you practice. Tinker with the examples and write a few sample programs of your own using the concepts from the book.

no worries at all .....u can make it better by just a little bit practice.
keep in mind that if you are new to java(or infact new to world of programming) you should start with coding. try to read between the lines of scjp objectives....they ask you to write code for blah blah blah the reason being that they want to certify that you have good experience in programming and they don't want you to just cram the things and have a better score......and if you have experience of programming then just go through the your weak points.

hope you got it.
I agree. Here's the link:
