I think, it is now time for us to see your HeadFirst SCJP book.
Well, here are the reasons behind my claim:
I am writing the golden principles of Head First learning first and based on them I am writing my reasons for why we need HeadFirst SCJP.
1)First, you have to get it, then make sure you dont forget it. Its not about pushing facts into your head. Based on the latest research in cognitive science, neurobiology, and educational psychology, learning takes a lot more than text on a page. We know what turns your brain on.
R)Lot of people who read SCJP book by KB(other books are toooooo tough for our brains! ) say or believe that it was really tough in memorizing the things required for the exam. It wasn't easy to get the things and oh..it was(is) really hard to make sure we don't forget it! I simply started pushing facts in my head. I simply want to avoid this. So, I would like to read HeadFirst SCJP.
2)Make it visual.
R)When compared with HeadFirst Java, SCJP book has got very very less visuals. This issue MUST be addressed.
3)Use a conversational and personalized style.
R)Wow! 100% it is..so, no comments!
4)Get the learner think more deeply.A reader has to be motivated, engaged, curious, and inspired to solve problems, draw conclusions, and generate new knowledge. And for that, you need challenges, exercises, and thought-provoking questions, and activities that involve both sides of the brain, and multiple senses.
R)No problems to solve, so no curiosity! I am not saying about self-tests. I am saying about some problems to make sure we are good at particular topic of the chapter. Some programming exercises immediately after the topics would be good. There are too little exercises!
5)Getand keepthe readers attention.
R) Some topics need this. Though the entire book on the whole keeps the attention, some topics need this more. Especially, the areas of API and threads.
6)Touch their emotions.
R)What should I say here?!! YOU are always high in this issue.

I know, KB believe in this principle of excellence: "There is always some way to do it better." I believe, there is really some way to do the current SCJP book better!

Thanks for the wonderful opportunity to directly address the gifted authors. (How many authors of the world allow their readers to do this?!)

Personally, I think if I saw a topic titled "Jim Yingst, you MUST read this!" I would probably either ignore it or delete it without reading it. Sometimes people in this forum sound a little too demanding of attention. It's not something I'd want to encourage. Chill out.

Hi Faisal,

Yeah, Jim's right, your title was a little bit demanding

Anyway, we like the fact that we have a non - HF book that does well. We're most interested in learning about learning, and so far every book we've done has been, to a degree, an experiment. We like to think that there are lots of ways to apply "brain-friendly" learning techniques and so HF is one way that seems to work, and the SCJP book seems to be another way.

hth,

Bert

p.s. Don't be surprised if you see other experiments...

Fixing up topic title to be a little quieter. (A bartender's job is never done...)

The current K & B SCJP 5.0 book is heavy enough to lug around - I guess a HF Style book would be twice as heavy.

When you have time Faisal, I suggest that you read through this guide to posting. You're doing fine dude

In fact, I've just seen some things to review for myself in that list.

Many many thanks for being so kind!
I tried to change the title but was unsuccesful
Now it looks best.
Oh! I never thought about the size.. yeah, it would weigh more.. but as long as it doesn't put and decrease weight on my brain, I don't mind carrying it.
Now I understand.. how a title has changed the post's direction. I was actually expecting a good discussion but just because of a small error in title, whole thing has taken a U turn.
But, I am really excited too see K&B's other experiments.. hopefully very soon!
Thanks again!
