Hey All,

I'm stuck up in a dilemma as to whether should I take up SCJP 1.4 or SCJP 1.5!

Can you please give some info about the advantages of becoming SCJP 1.5 given the fact that f/w's like Struts 2.0 etc are using JDK 5.0 and also lot of new topics are covered in the same(higher difficulty level)?

The thing is: I've just started preparing for SCJP and I plan to take that up in second week of July. I've some working experience in using JDK 1.4 and absolutely no exp using JDK 1.5.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Sanjeev

If I were starting now, I'd go for 5.0. There are lots of new things in 1.5 that you'll have to know sooner or later.

Hi Sanjeev,
I suggest you to go for SCJP 1.5 because its the latest and has new features. Everybody prefer the latest.

in my opinion 5 is the one to go for as it has a number of major new features such as:

enums
var-args
for each loop
generics
autoboxing/unboxing

that are well worth getting to grips with as these are the biggest changes to the java language in years.

Yes, SCJP5 would be a better investment in terms of the effort you put in.
I'm preparing for SCJP5 too, and the new topics, though take some time to get a grip over, are worth the extra effort. The new features are here to stay.

Hi friends,
I think what everyone has suggested sounds good that 1.5 is new and latest so it should be the obvious choice,as i am also having same confusion, i want to know do companies prefer 1.4 or 1.5 as what i know of most companies are still working on 1.4 in INDIA.
please put some light on this thing in the perspective of companies prefrences in india.

Thanks
Deepak

Hi deepak,
Look scjp 1.5 is the latest one and has new features. If a company is working on scjp 1.4 would they hesitate to prefer a person who has done scjp 1.5. I dont think so. I prefer go for scjp 1.5

I'm going for the 1.4, though mostly because I'm lazy and I already have the books, otherwise I'd go for the 1.5.

I also don't think there is much of a difference in 1.4 and 1.5 that an employer would be wowed over. I'm not sure how many SCJPs there are, but I suspect in a pool of candidates competing for the same job, not many, and maybe even none, of them would have an SCJP, so the possibility of 1.4 candidate vs 1.5 seems slim to none. Just my $.02

I did scjp a year ago, and choose deliberately to do 1.4. The reason for this:
my book was about scjp 1.4, and basically 90% of the mock exams I could find on the internet were (by then) about scjp 1.4.
My strategy was to work through a book, and then do as many mocks as reasonably possible, until the point my scores came standard above 90%. Then do the exam (my exam score was 93%, so the strategy worked).

I don't know if mocks on the net are more up to date one year later. I found that in everyday live I picked the 1.5 items up quick enough in every day working life. So I don't think the argument about "being up to date" is very strong, if most of the available study material is not up to date.

I have done SCJP1.4 last june. Now i am planning to do SCJP1.5 in next month!!!
I think there is lots of stuff is there to learn in SCJP1.5 than scjp1.4.
I think it is ridiculous to do SCJP1.4 now!!!

you had a lot of time so its better to take scjp 1.5 than 1.4 because many new features are added than 1.4 and many prefer new version than old and sun also prefers to take exam on current version.

I have a requirement at work (if I want to continue working there) to get a SCJP cert. I was working toward the 1.5, but struggling with it. I have no experience working with any of the new topics in the 1.5, my current job doesn't use any of them, and we have no expectation that we will use them within the next year, at least.

The deadline is looming, though, so I looked back at the 1.4.

Suddenly, I was almost finished. Everything in the 1.4 is what my company uses currently. I have direct experience with all of the topics covered. Now I'm passing the mock tests, and planning to schedule my first exam next week (the 31st), and working to fill in those last few gaps to improve my scores.

So, yes, the 1.4 is very viable. It is what most businesses (remember, they move slowly to upgrade) are using NOW, and will continue to use for some time. It is what IBM is selling and supporting, and many big corporations are just now starting to move to that level.

So it depends on your mileage: If you're starting from scratch, go for the 1.5, because it's all new either way. If you have working experience with 1.4-level systems, this will be the quicker path to a cert. Then you can upgrade to 1.5 later, if you ever feel the need.

Wish me luck on my exam!
