PointBase, Inc., the leader in mobile wireless 100% Pure Java(tm) data management and synchronization products, presents "Code for the Road," an application contest that will award $25,000 for the best Java application using PointBase data management products. The Grand Prize will also include the opportunity to have "breakfast with a VC" to discuss potentially funding the success of the winning solution.
PointBase has also established separate categories for "commercial developers" who are writing applications for resale, "in-house developers" who are creating solutions for use within their own businesses, and "personal developers" who are writing applications that may be posted as shareware or freeware within the Java community. The runner-up in each category will be awarded $5,000.
The contest is open to new and existing solutions that developers have written to SQL and JDBC standards. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the JavaCon Developers' Conference in Santa Clara, California on September 26.
For more information, or if you would like to enter the "Code for the Road" contest, please visit The deadline for all entries is August 15, 2000.

I'll just take an informal poll among readers of the Jobs Discussion forum. Is this spam? What do you think I should do with it?

Difficult. It's obviously of interest to Java developers (ie us), and although it doesn't really suit "Jobs Discussion", I can't think where else to put it.
On balance, I vote to leave it, but think about a general solution to this sort of post (new forum, "news" section on the site, blanket ban, etc.)

Yes, it is spam, IMHO. But keep the last two lines. They are the place with all the information needed about this kind of activities.

As worded it does look like spam, but would it also have been spam if someone else had posted something like:
"I see from their website that PointBase inc are running a competition with a $25000 prize ...."?

If the person who posted this had registered and used their real name or at least put it in the post, then I'd give it more credence. However, the anonimity of the post makes it suspect, IMO.

I did not mean for my posting to be spam and I apologize if it was. I could not find any other room on Java Ranch where it fit. I was just hoping to generate interest. Thanks!

Eduardo81, no big deal. Just keep in mind things are less likely to look like spam if
(a) they come from a registered user
(b) they are personalized a bit (as in saying, I'm trying to generate interest in this and thought this might be a good place to post it) rather then looking impersonal. the goal of this forum is discussion after all .
as things stand, this post generated some fruitful discussion, so no reason to delete any of that, eh?
I agree. Here's the link:
