My understanding is that this feature should mark all the threads as 'read'. Now if a new post were to come in on any thread, the thread would show up as unread. Somehow, this does not work for me. Its a little flaky. Works some of the time.

Am I even understanding the intended functionality correctly?

The posts will also be marked as read when you close and reopen the browser, in my experience.

I think they also reset if you logout and log back in.

Or you can go to My Profile and click on the "Update New Post Indicators"...

You might have to click on it twice though. Sometimes it doesn't work the first time for some unknown reason.

I've found with both Mozilla and Firefox that I have to reset them twice before they take. I usually click on the "Update New Post Indicators" link and then refresh my browser as soon as the interum page comes up that tells me:
"Your new post indicators have been updated.
Sit tight while we......".

I've never tried with MSIE.

The description of the function: "This function will update the board's new post indicators to flag topics that have been posted to since either the start of your browser session or the last time that you logged in or used this function."

So I would expect it to require to invocations to make me current. The first invocation to mark read everything that was posted before I started my session. And the second time, to clear everything else.

While the mantra of two invocations does do the trick, it doesn't do it in the intended fashion. But, good enough for my purpose.

Thanks everyone for the two invocation tip!

Until your post, I played by the rules and waited for Saloon.JavaRanch.com to do whatever it needed to do in those three seconds. Thanks for helping me save ~3 seconds every time!! Nice trick indeed.
