I never fully understood just what justified the reputation recruiters get until I was on the other side of the fence. I've spent from mid-June to late September in Job Hunting Hell!!! (and I'm supposed to know what I am doing.) Here's a short attention span rendition of my adventures: Posted my resume to Monster and shot it out to a dozen "good looking" places, result- very large volume of poor quality response...several interviews, one offer. Medical benefits ( which were so good they were secret before the offer) that did not cover Maternity, well baby was extra, but DID cover brith control, did not cover pre-existing condiditons, and only covered a max of three people in the family-can we say social agenda? Was contacted by a Head Hunter (we call these Cannibals) spent Three Weeks in interview after interview with ONE client. The job description changed SIX times. Got one free lunch-seafood. He never made a decision, and the cannibal didn't have any other opporunities. Ran a Job Search Agent on Dice, got 50 jobs a day (one of which was actually a recruiting position, on average)- nothing new compared to other sources. Another Cannibal calls with "Job of a Lifetime." Does not qualify me, tells me verbatim what I need to say in the interview in order to get an offer (agian, never asked what my criteria are). I take a day to go Downtown (not wanting to work downtown, but was told I could telecommute.) Pass interview on my own talent, not the 'coaching'...no telecommuting, not even a laptop. No dice. Peeled resume off of Monster, kept deleting the Dice email and took a break. Attended a few networking events out here, like AIP and KnowJack. Made good contacts, found a cool start-up. Interviewed, position was underfunded, but came away new friends and good business contacts. Sent a networking letter via online recruitment forums and those whom I met networking in person. Interviewed for several tremendous oppotunities...and whittled it down to two. Leveraged one against the other and negotiated a great package! I'm now with www.collaborex.com A super B2B with a customizable tool set of hosted solutions ( all written in Java and XML of course!) Full medical PPO including dental, vision, and life (for $2 a month), Pre-IPO stock, Commission, Bonus, and 27 paid day off PLUS holidays. The second day I was doing a presentation for the rest of the recruitment team, and actually got to talk to he Practice Managers about they REALLY need. This will be my third week and it has been a blast. Heck, I deserve it. At any rate, I think I learned to appreciate people on a job search now I've walked through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Maybe you guys have had worse experience. I left a lot out, but WOW! I don't believe some of the stuff that's out there. Job hunting and recruiting are two full-time jobs. -Pat

Amen to that, brother! Job-hunting is exhausting on many levels and definitely, a job in and of itself. Hadn't done it for ten years, but now I've done it three times in the past five years. Getting to old for this #$@!... At any rate, sincere congrulations! You must feel gratified and vindicated. Cannibals & their kinfolk can beat down your self-worth, but it sounds like you refused to be julienned. P.S. I don't like Monster much either - as an applicant or an HR drone!
