Hi, this is my first post at javaranch.com

I would really appreciate any suggestion in deciding which version of the SCJP exam to take 1.4 or 5.0.I am new to java, working on it from the last three months, and have some previous exposure to programming in C++. I am currently a stay-at-home mom which means that I only get to spend 2 or 3 hours each day on Java. But I am taking small steps at a time and making progress each day! I want to get this certification for two reasons: to boost my confidence and to get back into the job market. In my short research I found that 5.0 is a difficult exam and so inclined towards 1.4. Any advice please? Thanks, preeti

Welcome to JavaRanch!

It's true that the 1.5 exam is a little more difficult than the 1.4 exam, but the 5.0 version has many significant new features that are very useful. Since you're starting out, I recommend the 5.0 exam. In the long run, it will be better to learn the 5.0 features now, instead of learning the 1.4 version and then catching up.

Hello Preeti Vadlamudi,

Welcome to JavaRanch

I also would suggest the same as marc told. As i was also in the impression of "not getting into the updated version" until required. But down the line when you think, you would definitely be insisted to be up-to-date with the technology. By keeping that in mind, its definitely suggested to go for the improved version, 1.5!

Good luck

Honestly, in your case it would take pretty long time to grasp 1.4 concepts
and 1.5 as well. If you are thinking of getting into job market pretty soon ,as in 1-2 months, I will suggest SCJP 1.4.
However if you got quite a time to prepare, then you can work for SCJP 1.5.

Answer is

Depends

!

Other thing is that once you get 1.4 certified, you can easily take 1.5 upgrade exam ,providing you a good learning curve time as well.

Thanks Raghavan and Vikrant!

Now that I have some idea on the exam version, I have a question on the book. Not sure if I need to start a new topic!

I refer to Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates for 1.4 version, 2003 edition.
Do you guys know if that is still suitable for the current SCJP 1.4 exam?

And is the latest version for 1.5, of Sierra and Bates, a good book for the SCJP 1.5 exam?

Yes to both questions. Regardless of which exam you take, the corresponding K&B (Kathy & Bert) study guide is your best resource (in my opinion).
