Hi everyone,

I have completely decided to do the SCJP certification. I've just completed my engineering in IT field. We did not have Java in our curriculum, and so I don't know Java. But I ought to do the certification as I've come to know, it can fetch better jobs. Can you please guide me through it? I wish to ask, what's the appropriate time to start from scratch and do the certification? I mean, how much time it'll take or rather, how much time should it take? What books should be referred (I ahve the Kathy Sierra book) and how lng will it take to do the certification? I'm looking forward to you suggesting me the required details. I shall be grateful.....

Hi Aseem,
I suggest to read some good java books (head first is the best one), do some test coding, do as much as mock exam as posible.
For time frame, its depend on how much time you spend for study.
I took about 2 months partime preparation (1-2 hours/workday).
Practise the mock exams, if you score around 80% then you are ready.

Good luck,

Don't get your hope up, if you are starting from scratch it will be very tough. It took me 6-8 months just to get to know java and I had a lot of free time every day. If you are working every day, it would be hard for me to imagine you can do it within 1 year. Unless you just love programming and spening 3 hours+ a day doing it.

If you are new to Java it will take 6 months or more. Kathy & Bert(java-1.5) is a good book. Read it at least twice. After reading take no.of mock tests.

Thank you very much for your help. So I'll set a realistic target of around 6 months before I start thinking about SCJP. Till then, I'll start with Java basics. Thanks for your help. Tc.....

Howdy Aseem Belsare ,

Welcome to JavaRanch

A good interest, dedication and practice in a continuous manner will really help you learn and appear for the exam within 4 months on an average (as you say you are very new to Java).

Good luck for the exam
