I came to Canada in Dec 2000 from India as a Landed immigrant.
I have almost two years experience working with Java (almost 10 months with HTML,JavaScript, applets,GUIs(AWT,SWING) and almost 14 months with Servlets ,JSP, JDBC , out of which 4 month with weblogic and ejb). also I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer and I have a good know how of UML and Rational rose.I have a degree in Civil engineering.
I have started applying for jobs from the first week of jan 2001 and unfortunatly I am not getting very good response.
Some head hunters are asking me for professional refrences in north america, I don't know any one here professionally, they want someone who has worked with me in India and now he/she is working in north america , unfortunaltly there is no one here who worked with me in India, they are not intrested in my refrences in India.
Can someone give me any suggestion
Some peaple say that now a days economy is slowing down and there are not many jobs...is that true???

The companies here are only counting the experiences in N. America. Try hard, or go for a M. S. degree in EE or CS here.
Good luck,
Simon

That's ridiculous! What city are you in? What should it matter where your references are?
I think maybe your not looking in the right place. Head hunters, at least here in ottawa, seem to be a very good place to go if you have experience.
Where have you been applying?

I have not started applying in ottawa .
Simon, you are talking about NA experience , six months ago one of my friend , who had same experience as mine got a job offer from USA while he was in India and they arrnged H1 visa for him.
It feels in Canada , the jobs are far more less than in US.
Any one can please comment.

hi, Sarmad,
Of course, US has much much more opportunities than Canada.
Nortel (in Ottawa) recently cut off over 1,000 jobs. You may not easily get a job in Ottawa right now.
Take more time, you may success.
regards,
Simon
