if you plan to do SCJP1.5 one of the best books for that is one by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates.... but that book is not an introductory book on JAVA so if you are completely new to JAVA i suggest you spend some time getting familier with the language and then start studying for SCJP

K&B assumes that you already have a foundational knowledge of Java. Try Head First Java (by the same authors) for an excellent introductory level text. But do note that you'll definitely want to go on later to K&B to prepare for the SCJP exam, since Head First Java isn't a certification preparation text.
