Hi friends,

I need some advice on whether I should go for SCJP1.4 or SCJP1.5.

Here is the background-
I am new to JAVA.
I had prepared for SCJP1.4 last month (using K&B SCJP1.4 book), but then I came to know about JavaRanch, and saw people talking only about SCJP 1.5!
So I started preparing for SCJP1.5 (using K&B SCJP 1.5 book), but I find some concepts difficult to understand-- like Generics and Collections!
I couldn't score well in mock exams also ..!

My colleague (experienced person in Java) informed me that not many java/j2ee projects are using Java compiler 1.5 version!
So she suggested me to go for SCJP1.4 and then go for upgrade exam of SCJP1.5!

Please let me know if this is the right thing to do.
All suggestions are welcome..!

Welcome to JavaRanch.

Your questions is a question that's asked frequently here on JavaRanch.

As you know, SCJP 1.4 is for Java 1.4, and the current version of Java is version 6 - so Java 1.4 is already two versions behind the current version. Also, Sun recently announced SCJP 1.6, so SCJP 1.4 is now also two versions behind.

Why would you want to do an old exam for an old version of Java?

Yes I agree but what if I give Upgrade exam for 1.5 after I pass SCJP 1.4?
SCJP1.4 + Upgrade exam for 1.5 is equally important to SCJP1.5 exam..am I right?

I am really skeptical if I will pass the SCJP1.5 exam.
So I thought if I pass SCJP1.4 , it will boost my confidence

If you learn Generics and collections as per 1.5, it will certainly provide you more confidence. These are not that complex. Just do some hand on practice and you will feel easy.

I wouldn't want to go for two exams, instead of just one (money and time-wise). If you don't understand some topics at first, why not search for other sources to read about those areas?? I find the K & B book wonderful for the exam, but sometimes it's a bit short on certain areas. The it's better to read more and then come back to K & B for repetition.

Best of luck

Hi Prajal,

If you're planning to take the SCJP 1.5 upgrade anyway, there's really no reason why you shouldn't take the SCJP 1.5 right from the beginning. Frankly, I don't think passing the SCJP 1.4 will really boost your confidence all that much, since Java 1.5 introduced so many new language features. And don't forget that some topics in SCJP 1.4 are no longer in SCJP 1.5, which means you'll need to study more material overall if you go that route.

Also, I'm not sure if I really agree with your colleague's statement that not many Java/J2EE projects use Java 1.5. Legacy applications probably don't, but virtually every new development project I work on does use Java 1.5. Perhaps that statement's true for your company right now, but doesn't a big part of a certification's value stem from its affirmation that you're keeping up with the state of the art?

Sun released the SCJP 1.6 exam objectives on Nov 30. However, the exam is still not yet available at test centers (as far as I know), so right now you should still take the 1.5 exam. In any case, there weren't many changes in the exam objectives (see this thread for details), so you can always just supplement your SCJP 1.5 preparation with the few additional topics if you decide to wait for the 1.6 exam instead.

Yes, SCJP 1.6 now seems to be available.
