hi, I have finished my first reading of K&B yesterday.I took a mock test today and just scored a dismal 20%..I am feeling very low in confidence.I have taken the exam date on 24th of this month.will i be able to make it with further reading and taking mock tests, analyzing the areas i have scored low and improving on them.Am i on the right path...please advise
I sympathize with your sense of discouragement. Which mock exam did you just take? And have you tried other mock exams yet? You probably should do more than one to really gauge where you currently stand.
Still, 20% is admittedly pretty low. How much Java experience do you have? A somewhat experienced Java programmer (e.g. at least one year of full-time development experience) can probably prepare enough to pass the SCJP within two weeks. But if you don't have that much experience, you may want to consider postponing your exam date by at least one month, to be safe. This isn't one of those exams that you can pass just by cramming; you need to give yourself enough time to work through all the concepts, write sample code, and get some mock exam practice. Even if you're on leave/vacation and can study full-time for the next two weeks, it'll still be quite a challenge to raise your score from 20% to 59% within this short span. Unless you have a lot of spare cash, you probably don't want to take the risk of failing the exam and wasting your exam fee.
hi Kelvin, i actually took 2 of the whizlabs exams and scored 20% and 60% .and i have around 6 months of experience. Now i am not working anymore..Do you think i should postpone it by one month..? if i study for 5hrs a day can i still make it..?please help me. how am i supposed to go about studying from now on?

Ah, your second score (60%) is definitely a lot more encouraging. Across both mock exams, which topics did you score lowest in? And when you reviewed the questions you got wrong, how well were you able to understand the provided explanations?
In my opinion, the main key to success for the SCJP is getting lots of hands-on coding practice. When you're not sure about a topic you're reading or a question you're attempting, switch to your Java code editor and try writing some programs to test your understanding. For most topics, you'll learn much faster and more effectively this way, compared to only reading books and answering mock exam questions.
hey kelvin, i have not scored well on the following topics: serialization, threads and generics(specially wildcards)..serialization and synchronization i find them a bit confusing..can you suggest me as to how i can go about in these topics and also the generics part(using ?,extends and super). do you have some very simple code examples in those topics.if yes can you send them to me?.what do you think should i postpone the exam date?? thank you very much for your timely advise.
Don't give up! Read the book again and do lot's of testing! After first try i scored 50% from mock. After second time reading: 72%, 72%, 72% and 85%.
e.x. Today, I've mostly done testing on Threads since i was little confused about wait & notify in multi threading. Also cleared out some generics issues. Altogether I spend today 4 hours reading & testing.
Test is this Thursday...
