Why one public class per java file?

I am got idea that only public class can be declare per .java file. but i am not able to understand..

Why this type restriction is there. why JVM not able to understand more then on public class per file..

It is just a choice that the people at Sun made when they implemented the Java compiler.

It helps you to keep your source code organized; it makes it easy to find the file in which a certain class or interface is defined. If you have a big project with hundreds or even thousands of classes, this is important.
