I was on Examulator trying to get info on the SCJP course, but for some reason could not get subscribed to anything but the social forum.

Below is a copy of what I posted on the social forum(I'm afraid there isn't much acrivity there)... but generally I wish to know when I can sign up for the course... if there is a text to go with it... and what is the general structure.. also, are there grades? and if I finish the course successfully, would I be ready to take my certificate exam?

Thanks in advance... RKD (below is what I posted to examulator..sorry if it's redundant, but it gives my background)

Hi...
I am a 43 yr old programmer. The last 3 years I have been working in JAVA on the web application for a major insurance firm ( new business screens used by agents and customers to inter info for a auto insurance application... )

But I had a little in house training and the rest was all on the job/learn as you go. I'm doing fine on the applications I work on, but need some formal training and a SCJP seems perfect for me, and I hope eventually to get a SCWCD.

I want to take the courses available here, but don't know much about them. I know the free course (currently taking) but was wondering if it were too late sign up for the SCJP course.

Also... I have Eclipse/Websphere on my laptop... would I need to download anything else to compile and run any work needed for the course?

Is it self paced? Does completion of the course prepare me to take the SCJP exam?

If it's too late to take the course that started in 01/2008, when is the next offered?

Thanks,

RKD

It sounds to me like you have the right motivation. Having the SCJP is rarely a job pre-requisite but it can make the difference when an employer is deciding between two similar applicants. Also it focusses narrowly on the basics of the language that are easy to overlook even if you program in Java every day. For example Threading is a tricky topic that is very easy to get wrong, i.e. you can write code that appears to work yet one day fails because of subtle unforseen circumstances. You can get an idea of how the SCJP looks by checking out the SCWCD course at

"I want to take the courses available here, but don't know much about them. I know the free course (currently taking) but was wondering if it were too late sign up for the SCJP course."

If you have the goal of getting the SCJP be very careful about the syllabus of the course, there are many courses that claim to prepare you for the SCJP yet cover many topics that are not on the exam.

"Also... I have Eclipse/Websphere on my laptop... would I need to download anything else to compile and run any work needed for the course?"

I tend to recommend using the bare/naked JDK to be absolutly sure. I have had a few questions where eclipse would give an error whereas the JDK would give a warning (or similar). However an IDE is very useful for debugging purposes.

"Is it self paced?"

It is self paced and aimed at 8 weeks, so the next start date should be the 1st March. However if you start now I can roll you over so your subscription would run till the end of April.

"Does completion of the course prepare me to take the SCJP exam?"

It keeps very strictly to the syllabus of the actual exam. You get access to over 300 mock exam questions and there are a series of assignments asking you to write short programs. The programs are small but are aimed at the topics on the exam and I give feedback. Feedback is almost always, "yes you understand the concept" as most people seem to study seriously.

The cost of the course is US$50.

If you search at google for

"Java Programmer Certification" about 31,000 results are returned, my site is the first.
