Hi ranchers, I am a Permanent Resident of Australia and have working visa too. I am planning to move to Australia by Jan next year. I have just completed my Sun Java Certification for programmer's level just now. I have experience in oracle for 1 and half years. A year and half in Java and also made up a website. I am not from the computer background. I shifted to computers 4 years back. But I am a commerce graduate holder. I would like to know what are the opportunities for me in Australia. What kind or range of salary i can expect? Is taking up a job in oracle better or java better? I have heard that java has lost its demand. Is it true? Please help by provding some info on the same. Thanks in adv Padmini
Padmini, I am based in Melbourne at the moment and the demand for Java contractors is close to nil. Permanent salaries for people with about 3 years IT experience is between AUS$45k and $65k, depending on your skill set and how much a company likes you. Most of the work down here seems to be with consulting firms and therefore they pay a premium for people with good communication skills (written & verbal) In Sydney, the pay seems to be a bit higher and there are quite a lot more jobs, the downside is that you have to live in Sydney! Good Luck. Ian.
There are more hellish lives than to live in Sydney, don't forget Perth and Adelaide, much smaller cities but very nice lifestyle and affordable housing. You will probably be paying 49% tax off the top of your income, but you will be getting an excellent lifestyle. Marcus
You're probably right Marcus, however as a Melburnian it is my duty to slag off Sydnet Although in my opinion the lifestyle and affordability is much better in Melbourne. I really wouldn't consider Adelaide or Perth seriously for IT jobs though because from what I hear there are very few and they don't pay very well. Ian.

Thanks for the reply Marcus and Ian I am looking out for a job sitting right here. Do you have any idea about some agents who can recruit me right from here. When i come to Australia, i need some work for survival (doesn't matter if the pay is low at the start) In case u know of any vacancy also please let me know. Please also advise me what other knowledge i can gain before i come to Australia so that finding a job would be easier.
Padmini, With your Java and Oracle skills you should not find it hard to get a job although there may be some agencies that would not even forward your resume to their clients since you have no "local experience". Server side skills seem to be in greater demand (servlets, jsp, ejb). Some other job postings require OOAD experience so passing IBM's OOAD exam (and having this on your resume) may be to your advantage. Try to search for java jobs on jobnet.com.au and then check for yourself what most companies would require.
