You gain programming skills by practice! practice!! practice!!! and learn fundamentals by reading and applying it. As a beginner certification can be handy. Get yourself a good java book with lots of examples to practice.

Preparing for SCJP certification is a good start up to begin with. Get SCJP 5.0 certification book (I highly recommend K & B book) and finish SCJP 5.0 certification first. Once you are certified you will be confident enough to go further on other areas of J2EE.

Two rules to succeed in Java:

Rule 1. Practise Java programming.
Rule 2. Never give up Rule No. 1

Best of Luck!

I would suggest you go buy the SCJP 5 study guide by bert bates and kathy sierra. Install JDK 5 and practice for the exam. As for sharing exam material, anything that you need to pay money for cannot be shared here for free. Anything else can be shared via this forum

I think you meant to say by heart. You need not study anything by heart. You just need to learn. You will be tested based on your knowledge, not your memory

I would suggest you go for 1.5 or 1.6. 1.4 is pretty outdated.

Hi
i would like to tell you that you should read Head First java By kathy siera.
If you dont have any knowledge of java
and you want to satrt it from scratch then i think there is no good book other than Head first.
After that you should go for khalid mughal or SCJP kathy.
Best of Luck
